The Dominican government is insisting that the decision to postpone the signing of the Refidomsa sale agreement with Venezuela was made by President Leonel Fernandez, and not by the Venezuelan authorities.
Las week it was reported that President Leonel Fernandez would be signing the agreement of the sale of 49% of the shares of the Dominican Petroleum Refinery (Refidomsa) during his trip to Caracas this week, but the signing did not take place. Cesar Pina Toribio, the President's chief of staff, who accompanied the leader on his trip to Caracas, said that both nations would get together for the signing shortly.
He said that Fernandez informed the Venezuelan authorities that they should respect the Venezuelan Independence Bicentennial celebrations and leave the signing ceremony for a later date. "At any time, next week or the next, we will be signing the agreement. Don't worry, this will happen shortly, and it will be here, in the DR", Pina Toribio told reporters. The Minister of State without Portfolio, Miguel Mejia, said that the Dominican President had personally suggested the need to change the dates to his Venezuelan counterpart, Hugo Chavez.
