At least 324 new yellow cabs are being allowed to drive freely around Santo Domingo despite the fact that they do not have license plates. This was confirmed by accounts from some of the drivers. El Caribe reports that the taxis belong to the National Transport Confederation (CONATRA), one of the powerful transport unions, led by Antonio Marte. Marte said that the drivers had paid for the plates but the Tax Department (DGII) had not delivered them yet.
The reporters contacted Amet and the DGII but no one was willing to provide any explanation for the delay in issuing the plates. Marte said that last Monday they paid a woman named Ana Virginia for 527 license plates, and he asked the reporters to give him "a hand" in pressuring the DGII for the plates.
