The Santo Domingo International Book Fair is open at the Plaza de la Cultura site through 9 May. This annual book fair is the most attended cultural event in the DR.
President Leonel Fernandez, First Lady Margarita Cedeno and Vice President Rafael Alburquerque were at the opening celebration at the National Theater yesterday evening. This year the fair is dedicated to Mexico and Mexican Foreign Relations Minister Patricia Espinosa was the guest of honor. Also attending from Mexico was ambassador Enrique Loaeza Tovar, and the rector of the University of Mexico, Jose Narro Robles.
Mexico is being represented by 18 publishing companies, including the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) and the Fondo de Cultura Economica.
A further 26 countries are taking part, including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, Holland, Honduras, Italy, South Korea, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The book fair will include presentations by 233 Dominican writers and 188 foreign authors. The site consists of 38 pavilions and 2,375 activities have been scheduled, including 383 talks and discussions and 132 book-launches. A total of 45 artists have come from Mexico, Colombia and Spain.
