The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has denied that a helicopter that was assigned to the drugs agency downed a small plan suspected of carrying a drug consignment. The incident was described as the first recorded confrontation between drug traffickers and the Deproser, the joint task force assigned to the DNCD.
The small plane is known to have crashed in waters near Saona Island.
DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron said that the agency is investigating a shipment that was confiscated in Bavaro to establish whether it is related to the small plane.
As reported in El Nuevo Diario, Pilots Association president Pedro Dominguez said on Thursday that the DNCD helicopter is only for observation and does not carry guns for downing other craft in the air.
