Bilateral trade between the DR and Peru is currently worth US$90 million, with Peru exporting US$75 million to the DR. However, the DR is striving to increase this, and Deputy Minister for Industry & Commerce Marcelo Puello has announced that talks for a free trade agreement between Peru and the DR were likely to begin in the second half of the year.
Peru's Foreign Trade Minister Martin Perez said that negotiations with the DR would take place in parallel with free trade talks with Panama and other Central American countries. Perez visited the DR last week with a mission of 90 business representatives.
Peru's non-traditional goods have routinely accounted for about 98% of the country's exports to the DR over the last five years. These include non-metallic minerals, jewelry and fish flour. The DR exports free zone manufactured goods and medicines to Peru, and direct flights from Lima to Santo Domingo were introduced last year.
As well as exploring commercial opportunities in the Dominican Republic, Perez said the visit was also geared at trying to establish ties with Venezuela, making the most of what he described as the excellent relationship between the Venezuelan and DR governments. "We are going to ask the Dominican Republic's foreign trade minister to help us build a political bridge with Venezuela to become closer with the government of President Hugo Chavez."
Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso suggested the formation of a Peruvian chamber of commerce in Santo Domingo. He said that President Alan Garcia has invited President Fernandez to visit Peru. Morales said that President Fernandez is interested in strengthening relations, as has already occurred with Colombia and Brazil, as reported in Hoy. He added that Peru was a potential market for Dominican products.
