The Spanish government is investigating Arturo del Tiempo's connections in the DR, reports El Dia. The Spanish businessman was arrested after a 1,213kg cocaine shipment valued at EUR30 million was found at the port of Valencia. He has been kept in jail because his statements to the judge are considered not "reasonably coherent" and it is feared that he could escape given his comfortable financial situation and his ties to the DR.
Del Tiempo Marques says that the cocaine was planted in his shipment by people who wished to harm him because he had won several legal cases in the DR.
El Dia nevertheless makes the point that the case he won for defamation was for RD$2 million (approximately EUR43,000), but the cocaine shipment is worth EUR30 million.
Del Tiempo had declared that the marble shipment in which the drug was hidden was meant for a development in Spain. Nevertheless, further investigations showed that he did not own the property in question, and did not have plans or permits for the construction.
El Dia reports that the Spanish authorities confirmed that in 2010 Del Tiempo had made at least three shipments of goods that were put in storage with no sign of the material being put to use. Del Tiempo Marques reportedly paid EUR5,000 a month for the warehousing.
El Dia reports that last week National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra traveled to Spain to exchange information on the Del Tiempo Marques case with the Spanish authorities.
