Cabarete in May

Hey guys, newbie here.

Me and a friend are going to the DR in May and staying in an AI in Cabarete for a week. We are doing the AI there just to have a cover story and its proximity to Sosua. I know most AI's don't allow visitors so I was thinking of getting a cheap room in Sosua for partying. I was also thinking of renting a scooter for the week just to see the area and avoid constant taxis. Its my first time in the DR and I look forward to sun and sand but really looking to monger. I have read a great deal on here and have learned alot. If anyone has any tips on cheap rooms in Sosua (just for takeout) or the scooter rental idea I would love some feedback. Also, are there any good chicas to be found in Cabarete or nearby? Also, I keep reading about a curfew; can I still travel late at night? If you don't like newbie questions sorry and I don't expect answers from everyone. For those with more patience, thanks.

By all means rent a scooter for daytime sightseeing BUT do not think about using it for travel to Sosua at night. Renting a car would be a better idea.

May is a very quiet month for tourists (think more chica availability)

No curfew, bars open in Cabarete till 3am every night, (shit I was in one till 5.30am last Saturday night,) Ocean Sands Casino nightclub till 5am Fri and Sat (with strippers). Sosua clubs stay open till 4am Fri/Sat

I live in Cabarete so feel free to ask away. You'll have a ball.

So what is the All Inclusive in Cabarete you are staying in? I have only found some small hotels there or rental apartments...

Question to the resident expert(s) What is the nicest place to stay there on the beach, close to the restaurants, or a nice AI ? I really liked Cabarete to hang out, but the hotels have not impressed me sofar

Help on your chica question: Head over to Sosua, it is only a 15 minute drive in whatever motorized vehicle you choose. Scooters are pretty unsafe on that road, and certainly at night. I would get a little suv-ish rental, or just pay the taxis (up and down once a day would probably be similar to the rental fee without the risk!) Go to La Passion bar in Sosua, and you just use the rooms right there. Piece of cake, and you will have a blast !

You can read more here on the risk of renting a car, and the danger of motorcycling along these road at night. My 2 cents: you really don't need any vehicle in Cabarete (it is small and walking along the beach will get your everywhere you need to be) Then get your cab up and down to La Passion, you will be safe and happy. Proviso: I don't know where your AI is ! Maybe it is somewhere along the coast and not really _in_ Cabarete ?

Cabarete has lost something like over 1,000 hotel beds in the last few years. The large AI resorts of Azzurro and Punta Goleta amongst them and now as you say only smaller hotels and rental condos exist.

However there is still an AI option in town - Viva Wyndham Tangerine. Never stayed there but have heard it's pretty good.

To the east of town there are a couple of AI resorts and to the west Sol de Plata (formerly Breezes, although is probably nearer to Sosua).

As for the nicest place to stay there are plenty of options, but I am biased as I have rental condos!!!!

Yeah, we're gonna be at the Tangerine. Any key tips that I may not have seen on this board? I would love to have a couple of good meals while I'm there. I'm hours from any coast so holidays are my only chance to have good seafood. I love hole-in-the-wall type places that offer local cuisine too. I really appreciate the info you've given already. I was determined to get a scooter for the week but now I may get a suv or just use taxis. Also, I'm relatively young with no e/d issues but I have heard great things about dik meds and always wanted to try them. This seems like the perfect opportunity so how difficult is it to find a pharmacy and how cheap are they? Thanks again.:corky:

I looked up the Tangerine and it does look very nice. Mostly very good reviews on several websites too. I was surprised that the price is very reasonable (93-130 $ per room per night for 2 people all inclusive) So I may give that a try :)

I do really like that row of restaurants in downtown Cabarete and some are quite good I heard. Likely much better than the Tangerine AI, but also more money. I only ate at BLU which had nice food, and an absolutely awesome setting on the beach with sofas and big pillows. If I would stay at Tangerines, I'd still go and hang out there for at least some cocktails and appetizers.

There are some _really_ good restaurants if you search a little further. Not the hole-in-the-ground variety, but more eclectic and full priced dinner experiences. I am tempted by "7:36" (very eclectic caribbean food fusion, but you can only eat there on thursdays at 7:36 - seriously) and The Castle Club (a completely private dinner at the hilltop mansion of a chef) but I have not tried either one yet! I am sure you will have plenty of great choices right in "downtown" Cabarete though just strolling down the beach.


On the pharmaceutical front, you can easily stop by any local pharmacy and pick up supplies to make you go way passed the 4 hour recommended limits. Needless to say you do not need a prescription, and the prices are good. They will try to sell you local generic versions of the usual brandname drugs. "La Pela" is a generic Cialis and is a few $ per pill. The real Cialis is $5 per pill I think. I don't usually need them but after a few days in paradise, a little jumpstart can be helpful at my age group. If you are young and healthy, and have not banged a dozen chicas the night before, you probably won't see much effect from any of these aids. If that is the case, don't get the dumb idea that you should be taking 3 pills to get some effect. You may just want to try a Viagra after day 3 to see what it does for you; it will be a fun experiment, as long as you know you are healthy and have no heart conditions. Beware of guys trying to sell these drugs outside of some of the clubs, they can be candy or worse. You can buy brandname cialis and viagra from the hamburger guy at La Passion that I mentioned earlier ( a true one stop shopping experience: besides the pill you get a nice burger, a cold beer, a hot chica and room!)

Casita de Alfredo (Papi's) on the beach between Bambu Bar and the new Nikki Beach location is the best for seafood. People rave about the house special shrimp or lobster in pernod/garlic sauce.

Thanks guys, we will definitely hit Papi's and I think I will skip the meds at least for a few days. I don't really need them I just wanted to experiment alittle but why wast $ on anything other than drinks and chicas. Lol I can't wait to get there and sample all that the DR has to offer.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good dive shop in Cabarete. I would like to become scuba certified as well.

Can someone also describe Cabarete..as it compares to Sosua. (Or point me to a thread) I have always wanted to go. One of my wingmen claims it not worth the visit..but I suspect he is only concerned about the chicas..whereas I like to see and explore.

You can take the gwa gwa there or a public taxi from Sosua. Its under 50 pesos, I think and its a 15 minute ride there.

Yes, its worth the ride and after an hour, if you don't like it, jump a gwa gwa back.

why not at night? no street lights on highway makes it dangerous or is there another reason?

Casita de Alfredo (Papi's) on the beach between Bambu Bar and the new Nikki Beach location is the best for seafood. People rave about the house special shrimp or lobster in pernod/garlic sauce.

I always go to Papis at least once per trip.. We were there with The Thunderstars a couple of nights ago, as usual the shrimp was great. Not a cheap dinner but I do not mind paying once in a while if you know the food is always consistantly good.

Many reasons. As you said, there are no street lights, no street signs. The yellow lines (the few that exist) are ignored by all. Traffic lanes are ignored by all. Almost all drivers are rude, illitterate and agressive (the locals are bad too). The stories of bike vs. car or bike vs truck are very gorry. If you get hit, the response will probably be 1) rob you, 2) steel the bike, then 3) ignore you. I did taxis my first two trips. Trip 3 had a girl with a car. Trip 4 rental car that I only drove in the day. Even in the day it's a wild ride. At night Gua-Gua or public taxi. Again this is just my opinion.
