Results of a recent Penn, Schoen & Berland (PSB) poll indicate that the ruling PLD party will comfortably defeat the opposition PRD party in the 16 May congressional and municipal election. The poll showed that 60% of the electorate would vote, 3% more than in 2006. Spokespersons for the poll, Bernardo Vega, Michael Hernandez and Beth Lester announced the results in the National District, Santo Domingo province and Santiago, where most of the national vote is concentrated.
According to the poll, in the race for National District senator, Reynaldo Pared Perez of the PLD will win the senate seat with 54% of the vote; Milagros Ortiz Bosch will receive 43% of the vote. In the race for National District mayor, Roberto Salcedo of the PLD will defeat Alfredo Pacheco of the PRD, 56% to 42%.
In Santiago, Julio Cesar Valentin will win the senate seat 64% to 34% of Orlando Jorge Mera of the PRD. For the city mayor position, Jose Enrique Sued of the PLD/PRSC alliance leads with 54% over Gilberto Serulle of the PRD with 45%.
In the province of Santo Domingo, current senator and PLD candidate for re-election, Cristina Lizardo leads with 57% over 38% of Francisco Pena of the PRD. Juan de los Santos of the PLD leads with 65% against 29% of Tonty Rutinel of the PRD in the province of Santo Domingo.
