The daily radio talk show El Gobierno de la Manana speculated today that the Navy operation in which US$1.2 million was confiscated from a boat from Puerto Rico could have been staged. Participants on the program made the point that the Samana prosecutor was not involved in the confiscation, saying that this means it is highly likely that no charges will be pressed and the case will be dropped.
The Navy named Ismael King Almeyda and Felipe Encarnacion Paredes as responsible, but Gobierno de la Manana speculates that these men were not the ones who had brought the cash from Puerto Rico. Diario Libre says that one version circulating claims that a message was sent by cell phone, saying that US$4 million was being brought over. Samana prosecutor Juan Medina said that no charges were pressed because the department never had access to the ship nor to the money. "The only ones that had access to the ship were members of the National Drug Control Department, the Navy, the Puerto Rico Coast Guard and a Customs inspector", said Medina. He said that the prosecutor office should have been involved, but they were not given the opportunity. He said that when the operation began on Friday, they were told that their presence was not needed.
