The top 10 winners of the Rolex Farr 40 sailing tournament held last week at the Casa de Campo Marina in La Romana were Nerone (Massimo Mezzaroma and Alberto Signorini) of Italy, Transfusion (Guido Belgiorno-Nettis) of Australia; Barking Mad (Jim Richardson) of USA, Estate Master (Lisa and Martin Hill) of Australia, Fiamma (Alessandro Barnaba) of Italy; Goombay Smash (Doug Douglass) of USA; Plenty (Alex Roepers) of USA; Strungtje Light (Wolfgang Schaefer) of Germany; and Flash Gordon 6 (Helmut & Evan Jahn) of the USA.
According to Regatta News: "The 2010 series was decided on the final race of the final day, raced in front of a huge spectator fleet from rubber ducks to 25 meter sport fishers. Massimo Mezzaroma's Nerone (ITA) ended the day lauded champion, for the second time (first in 2003), having fought tooth and nail in a gladiatorial arena worthy of a blockbuster film. Guido Belgiorno-Nettis' Transfusion (AUS) were beaten at the last, but certainly not disgraced. The next Rolex Farr 40 World Championship will be held in Sydney in February 2011. What a rematch in prospect."
In the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship each yacht must be driven by its amateur owner/helmsman. Racing needs to be precise, tactical and intense. The skippers in their 40 feet long sailboats, and all identical in design, raced over four days in ten challenging races for the world championship crown, the World Cup and a coveted Rolex timepiece. Each crew was made up of four professional and five to six amateur sailors.
