President Leonel Fernandez has attended an event commemorating the 48th anniversary of the launch of the agrarian reform. At the ceremony, which was organized by the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD), 393 farmers received their permanent property titles. In the keynote speech, IAD director Hector Rodriguez Pimentel said the land covered 21,395 tareas (more than 1,300 hectares) and is worth more than RD$256.7 million. The farmers are located in Santo Domingo, Hato Mayor, San Cristobal, Monte Plata, Samana, Peravia, Azua, Monsignor Nouel and other provinces.
Rodriguez Pimentel stated that since the agrarian reform started 48 years ago, more than 100,000 families have benefited from the program, spanning more than 10 million tareas (630,000 ha.) in 510 farming projects across the country.
Rodriguez Pimentel is one of the most controversial figures in the Fernandez administration. Earlier this year, the director of the government corruption prevention department, DPCA Hotoniel Bonilla described him as "pathologically corrupt."
