Literacy promotion

Education Minister Melanio Paredes is supporting Listin Diario's Lea program that is reaching out to teach adults to read. The program added 47 more volunteer teachers to its trained adult literacy teaching corps. The group includes economists, lawyers, teachers, journalists and professionals from all walks of life. The newspaper provides free training for the instructors, and this latest group trained under the guidance of Isabel Gil Mercedes from the Ministry of Education's Adult Education Department. The "Lea" program aims to provide 4,000 adults with the ability to read and write this year. This is especially important in view of the fact that the latest census pegged illiteracy at 13.5% of the population. Minister Melanio Paredes has introduced a program called "Patria Letrada" (Literate Homeland) which will work together with Listin Diario.
