At least 56 school children suffered food poisoning after drinking what is thought to be contaminated milk at the Gregorio Luperon Primary School in Rio San Juan, in the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua). The children who were affected were taken to several medical centers with symptoms such as nausea, stomachache, vomiting, diarrhea and general weakness. Some of the children were discharged after showing signs of improvement. This mass food-poisoning outbreak once again puts the school breakfast quality issue under the spotlight.
In the past, news reports have linked contaminated milk to only one supplier that has been consistently defended by government officials.
The Ministry of Education's milk distribution was suspended in this community until 12 April, after hundreds of children came down with food poisoning earlier in the year.
