Geologist Osiris de Leon says that the government was warned about the negative aspects of the contract signed with the Barrick Gold mining company. He said the contract grants the Dominican government US$2 of every US$100 of benefits the mining company will receive. De Leon expressed optimism, saying that the case for a review of the contract could be taken to court, and could be won in the same way as the case against the Los Haitises cement plant. As reported in 7dias.com.do, De Leon, who was speaking in New York, outlined the economic and ecological disadvantages of the contract, which the government fast-tracked through Congress. He said the contract is designed for "Barrick to eat dinner, while Dominicans get to wash the dirty dishes".
He says that Art. 17.8 of the contract established that the deal could be revised, but not annulled.
