New car sales up slightly

According to Hoy newspaper, the Association of Vehicle Manufacturer Concessionaires (Acofave) reported yesterday that new car sales were up slightly, but did not disclose any figures. They repeated the fact that 13,937 new vehicles were sold in 2009, the lowest number since 2005, when the sector was suffering from the effects of the banking crisis of 2003-2004. Acofave executive director Enrique Fernandez compared the nearly 14,000 vehicles sold in 2009 as just 64% of the number sold in 2008, when Dominicans purchased 21,894 new vehicles. However, since last October there has been a slight but steady increase over the previous year's sales. Fernandez attributed the steady increase to the government's decisions to relax credit and lower interest rates, which in turn attracted more of the buying public.
