The Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (Adocco) has filed appeals against 25 senators who are allegedly refusing to account for the US$16.4 million (RD$597 million pesos) from the social fund, popularly called "the little barrel" - akin to the 'pork barrel' of US politics. The organization requested the indictments at the Higher Administrative Tribunal, and accused the legislators of violating the law on free access to public information.
In a press release, Adocco said that on 4 March they sent each of the 32 senators a letter requesting information on the use of the resources they had received from the social fund between August 2008 and March 2010.
However, only seven of the legislators, including Senate leader Reinaldo Pared Perez, have responded to the requests. Adocco says that the arraignment seeks to "force the senators to come forward and provide the information requested". According to Adocco president Julio Cesar de la Rosa Tiburcio, these resources "have not been handled with transparency" since many of the senators have employed people who now "say that they have never received a penny".
