Another judicial decision causes uproar

In San Francisco de Macoris a court's decision to release a woman implicated in the murder of a university student last year has caused outrage in the city. Protests included an attempt to set fire to the Palace of Justice, the destruction of the front windows of the building, burning tires in the streets and random gunshots. These were accompanied by street demonstrations and refuse strewn in the streets. Appeals Court judges Sulpicio Almonte, Claudio Anibal Medrano, Melquis Antigua and Rafael Arismendy de Jesus revoked the Habeas Corpus decision made by a lower court. That decision would have kept Marcua Magdalena Marizan (Elena) in preventive custody as the mastermind behind the murder of architecture student Lohara Taveras. Upon hearing the judges' decision, many of those present lashed out at the accused, overturning chairs and breaking windows.
