Education Minister Melanio Paredes said that the 56 children who required medical treatment at the Hospital Desiderio Acosta in Rio San Juan after drinking school milk suffered from intolerance to the flavored milk and had not been poisoned by the Ladom product. The children suffered nausea and stomachaches. Paredes said the milk drink would be replaced by juice. Of the 56 cases, 53 were students at the Gregorio Luperon School and another three at the Gloria Bido School.
Paredes said he would be meeting with executives of Lacteos Dominicanos (Ladom), which is the supplier of the milk that caused the problem. Ladom is the sole supplier involved in the much publicized food poisoning cases.
Paredes said that three other cases had been reported in Samana.
Approximately 150 students nationwide have been affected after drinking the milk, out of a total 1,375,000 rations distributed.
He said he would be meeting with representatives of Ladom, the company that distributes the school breakfast in the provinces of Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua) and Samana, to review the formula and safety in the production and distribution processes.
