The vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), Celso Marranzini says that 1.7 million euro is needed and up to seven or eight months manufacturing time to replace the transformer that exploded in San Pedro de Macoris. The explosion left several municipalities in the East without power.
Marranzini said that only the quick response by the local fire fighters and the technicians from the Transmission Company (ETED) avoided a tragedy. According to Marranzini, the security system of the National Interconnected Electricity System (SENI) worked to avoid a general blackout. While there was some interruption of service to other provinces, a major interruption of service was avoided.
Service to the La Romana, Higuey and El Seibo was restored, but San Pedro de Macoris and Hato Mayor continued to suffer the effects of the explosion.
