Hydrologist Gilberto Reynoso warns of the devastating effects of the pollution of the Yuna River. He said that the Yuna is one of the nation's most important watersheds, with three dams, three hydroelectric plants and four irrigation systems depending on its waters. The Yuna and its tributaries supply drinking water to a population of roughly 400,000. The hydrologist is concerned that the Barrick Gold mining operations could affect the river and cause what he described as a "national catastrophe" since the watershed represents a key part of the nation's hydraulic resource base. He said that the extractions at the Rosario gold mine over more than two decades had produced significant pollution in the Hatillo reservoir, in the sediments and the surrounding areas. He said that it was not acceptable to allow the operation of any project, no matter how profitable, that interfered with the availability of water for human consumption and other uses.
