Amidst charges and counter-charges, the two men who were arrested for allegedly transporting US$1.2 million in cash by sea from Puerto Rico, were released yesterday after the 48 hours given to the District Attorney to file charges expired with no charges being placed on the docket.
The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) freed Ismael King Almeyda and Felipe Encarnacion Paredes who they accused of carrying the US$1,269,416 in cash for use in a drug transaction. However, the defense lawyer for the two men said that they told him that they had been carrying US$5 million.
Felipe Portes, the lawyer for the pair, told reporters that the District Attorney had not been able to file any charges against his clients. He said that it was up to the investigators to discover where the money came from and where it was supposed to go.
Listin columnist Orlando Gil comments today that Portes is the last known lawyer to represent Sobeida Felix Morel, fugitive in the drug trafficking case of Jose David Figueroa Agosto. Gil recalls that money was also said to be missing in the case of US$4.6 million confiscated during the arrest of Sobeida Felix. He writes that the way the case has been handled opens the door to lots of speculation.
