Sociologist Rosario Espinal says that President Leonel Fernandez of the ruling PLD and Miguel Vargas of the PRD are campaigning aggressively in the congressional and municipal elections because they are focusing on setting bases for their own campaigns in 2012, as reported in Hoy. Both politicians are presidents of their respective political parties.
She says if the PRD does not do well, followers will question Miguel Vargas' leadership of the party. In the case of Leonel, she says the focus is on re-election. She says that a widespread PLD victory opens doors, "unfortunately" to a project for re-election for President Leonel Fernandez. She says that the PLD's strategy is to present the PRD as inadequate and incapable of governing.
