The First Forum on Business and Investment for the Rebuilding and Sustainable Economic Development of Haiti has led to alliances between Dominican, European and United States companies that should create jobs and assist in the rebuilding of the devastated nation. The forum made it possible for more than 300 national and international businesses to get together in Santo Domingo. More than 500 business meetings were held between local and foreign companies.
Santo Domingo Chamber of Commerce president Maribel Gasso said that the forum would help consolidate Dominican-Haitian relations as well as give a push to the economic recovery of the neighboring country. Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso outlined Haiti's main needs: Housing, government offices, streets, highways, avenues, jobs, agriculture and reforestation and improvements in the areas of electricity and telecommunications.
Haiti's Minister of Industry and Commerce Josseline Colimon-Fethiere suggested close coordination between the Dominican and Haitian customs and tax authorities.
