Carlos Fuentes, one of Latin America's most important writers, has called for the strengthening of the nation's education system saying, "Education is the basis of everything, without education there is no development, no progress...."
Fuentes gave his speech while receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra in Santo Domingo. Fuentes visited on occasion of Mexico being the special invited country of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair 2010.
On Saturday, the literary great made a keynote speech to a packed house at the National Theater. He spoke on "The novel of the Mexican Revolution: from Mariana Azueta to Juan Rulfo".
On Sunday Fuentes received the heraldic order of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella from President Fernandez in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Carlos Fuentes made special mention of Dominican man of letters Pedro Henriquez Urena who lived and wrote in Mexico in the early twentieth century.
Speaking at a press conference, the Mexican writer also commented that the United Nations should sponsor the creation of a Protectorate in Haiti. He said that otherwise the "traditional" corruption in Haiti would impede the country's recovery and development.
During his visit, Fuentes also spoke up in favor of legalizing drugs. He said that Mexico should appeal to security forces in East Germany, France and Israel to fight drugs.
