The two leading contenders for senator for the National District (Santo Domingo) have long track records in politics. Listin Diario tells its readers that 53-year old Reinaldo Pared Perez, running for re-election for the ruling PLD party, has been in Congress since 1996. He was a deputy from 1996 to 2002, and has served as the senator for the National District since 2006. He is a doctor in law from the state university UASD, graduating in 1981. He leads the Senate, and has been secretary general of the PLD since 2001. He served as a city councilor from 1986 to 1994. He joined the party in 1975.
He campaigns on the basis that under his leadership the Senate has held more sessions, and he established 32 bank accounts for the senators to handle the "little barrel" funds they receive for "social assistance" to their constituents. He also has campaigned for the work of the Senate to move forward laws that need to be enacted now that the country has a new Constitution.

73-year old Milagros Ortiz was the senator for Santo Domingo from 1994-1998 and 1998-2000. Like Pared, she is a doctor in law from the Universidad de Santo Domingo (before it became the UASD). She served as Vice President and Minister of Education from 2004-2004 and worked as campaign chief for Juan Bosch in 1990 and 1994. Diario Libre reports that she is committed to working for transparent and accountable government. Ortiz said she used the funds from her two vehicle exemptions to open 14 community pharmacies during her term as senator. She says her role will be to legislate and provide checks on the use of government funds, and that she wants to be the voice of capital city dwellers. She is proposing 12 bills.
