Of the 178 deputies, 131 are running for re-election. Others are seeking jobs elsewhere, like Julio Cesar Valentin who is now running for the post of senator for Santiago and Agnes Berenice Contreras, formerly of the PRSC, and now candidate for the PRD for senator in Elias Pina. That is 74% of deputies seeking re-election, says Juan Bolivar Diaz in an analysis in Hoy.
In the case of the mayors, 58% are seeking re-election, with 90 of the 155 candidates seeking to remain in office.
"This high incidence of re-election shows the scant mobility that characterizes the party system in the DR, where party leaders and government officials become permanent in the posts, closing the doors to be replaced, holding on to a system that is rich in privileges and poor in transparency and penalties for those who incur in acts distanced from morality, ethics and legality," he writes.
