The quality of Dominican cigars has put the DR in the lead in sales of units, volume and value, Hendrik Kelner, president of the Association of Cigar Producers (Procigar) told Diario Libre.
He said that hand-made Dominican cigar exports are at around 460 million units, but the financial crisis in 2009 affected demand, and 200 million were sold for US$300 million. Of the total sales, US$220 million is for hand-rolled cigars and US$80 million for machine-made cigars.
The DR leads in hand-made cigars, and competes for machine made with a volume of 550 million units in 2009.
Kelner says there are 10 medium and large-sized manufacturers in the country, employing 15,000 people. But he estimated that when another 20 small factories are included, and the work preparing the tobacco and in the farms is calculated, some 70,000 people make a living from the crop.
