Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew in from Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday for the much-announced and twice-postponed signing today of the Venezuelan purchase of a 49% stake in the Dominican Petroleum Refinery. Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) will be the new operator of the state-owned refinery once the contract is signed. He announced that the plan was to refine petroleum in the DR for distribution to the rest of the Caribbean. He arrived at Las Americas Airport at 1:20am.
Chavez announced the decision and confirmed the plan to purchase the shares during his visit to Buenos Aires. Chavez was in Argentina to attend the Summit of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).
