Santo Domingo Metro Office (Opret) director Diandino Pena says that the government plans to extend the second line of the Metro from Los Alcarrizos all the way to San Isidro on the eastern side of Santo Domingo. He told Diario Libre that they are working on locating optic fiber cables, water pipelines and sewage lines, and studying the ground quality.
Yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez met with Pena and French business representative Joan Giacinti at the Presidential Palace. Pena said the meeting with Giacinti was in the framework of an agreement signed by President Fernandez and his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, to support the Dominican Republic's railway system.
"With God's help, the second line of the Metro will be a reality and more successful than the first. The Metro has surprised us lately, since the daily passenger count has increased to 100,000", Pena told Diario Libre.
To hear the official tell it, the excavations on the V Centennial Avenue and Padre Castellanos are part of the joining of two stations, as reported in Diario Libre. Diandino Pena told reporters that in the next week the authorities would decide on the extension of Metro II. Opret had planned on taking the Metro II from Los Alcarrizos to San Luis, but later announced that it would only go as far as the Maximo Gomez line.
Pena said that he would hold a press conference after the elections to disclose more definitive information, including the size of the Metro, the budget, and the state's participation in its construction.
"We decided to extend the Metro to San Isidro because of the demand from the community and the military personnel who live there".
Pena told Diario Libre that the Metro will not reach San Isidro during this administration, but the groundwork would be laid out for the new authorities to finish it.
