According to recent news reports, increasing numbers of Haitians are moving to Puerto Plata in search of jobs. Hoy reports that most of these migrants, who do not hold any identification documents, are offering unskilled labor. The women are known to work making braids for tourists or as masseuses, while others work as prostitutes. The men find jobs cleaning shoes, in construction, farming or gardening, or selling roasted peanuts, sweets and crafts on the beaches and near hotels.
Hoy quotes a sociologist as saying that the Haitians live together in overcrowded conditions and that some are known to resort to crime and selling drugs.
Hoy reports that despite the increase in illegal migration, Department of Migration authorities have been looking the other way.
Hoy reports that Maximo Iglesias, spokesman for a hotel association on the north coast, has said that unlike informal Dominican workers, the Haitians are not organized.
