Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) spokesman Servio Tulio Castanos Guzman has described the staged incident in which policemen were publically paraded as reformed gang members as "shameless". Castanos says that it is time that the President intervened so that the Police submit to the rule of law and the Prosecutor General.
TV investigative journalist Nuria Piera presented proof that two policemen had posed as reformed gang members in a presentation on Police achievements made to the CDN TV station. Castanos Guzman called for a thorough reform of the Police.
Castanos Guzman made the comments after a meeting at Unibe with Alfredo Pacheco, who seeks to be elected as mayor of Santo Domingo on the PRD ticket.
The Police admitted that the presentation was staged by Colonel Andres Felix Fernandez, who is in charge of the Department for Managing Group Conflicts.
Finjus issued a statement calling for an evaluation of the constant Police appearances in the press and the credibility this information may have in the light of the admitted deceit in the CDN presentation.
"This is an unfortunate event because Dominican society needs a credible Police, that is efficient, and respects fundamental rights and submits to the effective controls by civilians in the Ministry of Interior & Police and the Prosecutor General Office", he said.
