A Dominican-Egyptian archaeology team searching for the tombs of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony has unearthed a 2,000-year old well-preserved headless Ptolemaic statue at Taposiris Magna, a temple 50kms west of Alexandria, Egypt's Ministry of Culture reported on Tuesday. Dominican Kathleen Martinez is working closely with Egyptian antiquities chief Zahi Hawass. The researchers are working on evidence that has shown that Cleopatra and Mark Anthony were not buried in the royal cemetery that is now submerged beneath the Mediterranean. Last year, archaeologists found a mask thought to belong to Mark Anthony, a bust of Cleopatra and 24 coins engraved with her name and image.
