We just finished the 2nd weekly movie night at Rocky's. Rick has been wanting to do this for some time but, like many things here, it took a little longer than anticipated to make it happen the right way. There's no point in doing something this much fun in a half-assed way!

Rick and David made the screen and bought special, and quite expensive, 3M paint specifically for screens and it's fantastic! Probably the largest screen in Sosua at 12' wide by 8' high! It has a great sound system, with Peavy speakers, LCD HDMI projector and my laptop for the player. :o

It starts at about 7:00pm, every Wednesday night, with "24" and the movie about 8:00pm. There is no admission charge and there was a great and growing turnout.

It ain't mongering but sometimes you need a little down time or diversion from chasing chicas. Next week will be the 3rd week and will continue to grow and adapt. Right now it's a TV show and a movie but no reason it won't evolve into live entertainment/sports. ;)

If you are in town and have and suggestions for movies send "dafishguy" a PM and come and join us!

p.s try the French onion soup (sopa de cebolla), it's amazing...and not yet on the menu although normally available!

I would think a good Kick Off would be the Movie -- Up in the Air with G.Clooney

Get the traveling folks something to relate to.

I think thats a great idea. I've always thought that the one thing that would go over big in Sosua would be a movie theater. Something like a movie night at Rockys would be the next best thing. The movie would be wrapping up around midnight and then off to the strip for your own personal drama....or porno as the case may be.

Will all these movies be recent releases or older flicks?

Recent would be great especially for us living here! Also maybe a small sign in Rockys showing the upcoming feature:wink: as " in the movie of the week"

It'll probably be what's on cable or on a DVD. It would cost an ungodly amount of pesos to play current run movies.

Apos mentioned that he is using his laptop, so he can show whatever he downloads. I have Iron Man II right now, imagine how that looks on my TV, you have seen it.

Apos, does your laptop have an HDMI out?

my dad has a dinner theater where he does a similar thing.

12 foot screen, digital projector, computer/blue ray etc...

he sends his girls down to family video and they rent two or three of the latest releases, or whatever he feels like seeing.

when its movie time, all the customers in the club get to vote on which of the three they watch.

but they are usually current new releases at the video store.

he also takes requests from regular customers. say, michelle and virginia wanted to see a movie they had not seen in a while, like The Earthling, with ricky schroeder, they would put in thier request to rick for what day they would like to see it.

he generally did the requests during the week, and then customer voting on weekends.

of course he does this seven days a week though...... and 2 movies a night. alternated with 2 live shows each night.

8Pm is a cool time to go for a swim with a chica or two and your wingman, and plan out the evening.

Well that's different!! Hadn't thought of that. The previous poster had me in the mind of a cineplex. Thanks.

This is going to sound little crazy, but a word of caution.

Other bars have done this in the past, like the old Voodoo Lounge in Sosua a few years back and Onno's in Cabarete more recently, and have had issues that forced them to stop showing movies.

The problem is that apparently there are 1 or 2 Dominican owned companies/organisations that own the distribution rights to movies in this country. They take a dim view of anyone showing movies in public outside of their movie theatres and take appropriate Dominican measures to force the offending parties to stop.

How the hell they find out I have no idea but I wouldn't advertise this service too strongly.

Excellent, it'll be cool to see you again so soon!

Anything you'd like to see in the best quality format you can manage. Rick's in charge of the whole thing and chooses the material but is interested in hearing what people want to see.

As recent as can be managed. It's more like coming over to a friend's house to watch flix on his new home theater with giant screen than going to the movies...with the benefit of full menu and bar :D

Mine does not but Rick's does as well as the projector. We're using a DVI cable at the moment ad it looks great! DVD's and whatever other format although we do not have an easy way to watch blueray without having someone bring their player from home. My laptop has an HD-DVD but unfortunately that format never took off. :(

Sounds like it is a good business decision. I certainly wouldn't mind taking the early part of an evening hanging at Rockys for some pizza, beer and a movie. If there is a chica that I like and who can understand english well enough, I would probably bring her along too. Can be the start of a fun night!

Maybe Rockys will wind up being in competition for customers with the Shark Bar if they consistantly show the big sporting events like NBA playoffs, boxing, World Cup etc. Would Rick consider doing a Sunday NFL gameday when football season starts? It could make for some raucous afternoons with a bunch of tourists and expats yelling and screaming for their teams. Maybe put out a sandwich board on the sidewalk out front to entice passers by. Offer some discounted appetizers and with the beer being priced reasonably, it could be a boon for business.

It would probably go over very nicely.

If you're just staying in Sosua, mid-afternoon when the sun is at it's hottest isn't really the best time to be out and about in Sosua, and that would be ideal to watch the game or some movies. Rocky's is well covered enough so that - assuming the projector is a good one - you should be able to show content pretty much all day long.

I don't really recall Rocky's having much in the way of sports-bar like appetizers other than wings, but if Rick basically stole TGI Friday's menu and had mozzarella sticks, spicy fries, sliders, potato skins and all that healthy stuff, he could probably get quite a following.

The movie people are probably most concerned about people who are charging to watch, and likely couldn't care less about regular DVD viewing, but I'm no expert on that. I have a feeling that as long as you keep the Sheriff and Mayor properly compensated, you can get away with more than a few things in Sosua, and showing movies in public probably isn't real high on their ish list.

I'm sure that sports events are ok, unless they want to shut the whole town down.

They shut the whole town down for one night last Saturday night and in the mid nineties they shut the whole town down for over a year.. It can happen but I doubt showing movies at Rockys will trigger it!!!!

I stopped in last night to check out the new screen. Very big and surprisingly very good picture for the size. Now if they could upgrade the seating it would be somewhere to go for a change of pace in Sosua.
