A relatively small 3.3 degree earth tremor shook a lot of people out of their houses in Monte Cristi at 5:20 in the morning. Many residents were still sleeping when the small earthquake hit the town. According to Listin Diario correspondent Felix Gonzalez, no injuries or physical damage were reported. The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) National Seismological Institute reported that the tremor, which registered 3.3 on the Richter scale, lasted between 10 and 15 seconds. According to local people, pictures and kitchen utensils fell to the floor, making a racket and increasing the panic factor. According to the seismologists, the quake was centered at 19.8 degrees North and 71.7 degrees West. PUCMM Geology professor Orlando Franco said that people should not run outside when they feel an earthquake. He said that the statistics from around the world show that people who run out into the streets suffer more injuries than the ones who stay indoors.
