With just six days to go before the congressional and municipal elections, the political parties have concentrated on getting the "undecided" voter, redoubling their campaigning in all the country's provinces and municipalities. Leaders, party faithful and sympathizers have been congregating so that, together with the candidates, they can put on a show of strength down the final campaign stretch.
Last weekend, the PLD and PRD parties pushed their political machines out on the streets with marches, convoys and lots of "pressing the flesh", where they had direct contact with the people.
President Leonel Fernandez, with his PLD, was in the Southwest. He moved through Pedernales, the municipalities of Vicente Noble, Tamayo, Galvan, Neyba, Jimani, Duverge and Cabral, and the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco, and Independencia. The PLD also campaigned through Barahona, Azua and Bani, the provincial capital of Peravia province.
Meanwhile, Miguel Vargas Maldonado and his PRD were in the province of Santo Domingo and traveled through San Isidro, El Bonito and San Luis as well as Villa Duarte, Los Mameyes, La Isabelita, Ensanche Ozama and the National District.
Political rallies are becoming more intense as the days go by and according to the electoral calendar, they will continue until next Friday, 14 May when all campaigning closes down prior to the Sunday, 16 May election.
This week both Fernandez and Vargas Maldonado will visit what are considered the "key" points where they will try and define the candidates and capture the greatest number of votes possible. The National District and the Province of Santo Domingo will be key points for the campaign to promote each of the parties.
