The Ministry of Public Works has started repair work on the Duarte Highway, along the Santo Domingo-Santiago section, as part of the VIADOM 2010 program, which is expected to cost US$470 million.
The repairs to the highway will include the removal of the damaged sections of asphalt, roadway repairs, and repaving of both lanes. After the damage is repaired, a complete new layer of asphalt will be laid down along 127 kilometers, stretching from Kilometer 21 of the highway to the entrance to Santiago.
Two crews of heavy equipment along with technicians and workers are responsible for the first phase of the repairs to the Duarte Highway. One is working from Santo Domingo towards Santiago, and 6 kilometers have been repaired and two kilometers completely repaved. The other crew is removing old asphalt and repairing and asphalting the lanes that go from Santiago to Santo Domingo.
These teams of workers and machines are advancing according to the time-line for the job. The VIADOM project seeks to construct, re-construct, repair and maintain 269 kilometers of the most heavily traveled roads in the country.
Also on the "to do" list is completion of the Santiago Bypass or Beltway. This four-lane highway will begin on Kilometer 148 of the highway and go north around Santiago and rejoin the highway at Kilometer 157, between Santiago and Navarrete.
This new roadway is expected to significantly reduce the amount of heavy trucking that goes through the city every day, relieve traffic in general and speed up the journey between Santo Domingo and the North Coast.
