Despite the fact that the Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET) told Diario Libre in April that they had still not reached any agreement with any of the companies that were bidding for the contract, in December 2009 they acquired a tunneling machine that will carry out the excavation of the Metro II of Santo Domingo, a Robbins EPB assembled in China.
Diario Libre reported that on their website, the tunneling machine manufacturer Robbins published that the machine, a drilling model EPB was scheduled to be sent to the country in February. The machine was assembled in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
The drilling machine, called a "mole" in the language of drilling engineers, measures 9.6 meters in diameter and it is between 30 and 40 meters long. The EPB drilling machines by Robbins are made especially for soft soils (clay or humid) or "difficult" ground, according to the information provided by Robbins on their website.
The Robbins Company was not one of the 16 bidders that were vying for the contract to build the Santo Domingo Metro. These included Odebrecht, Siemens, Enso Rail Systems and other well-known multinational companies.
The Robbins Company website also features a photograph dated 19 December 2009, which, according to the website, was taken in Santo Domingo, in which the Robbins negotiators were shown along with the Opret officials.

The 50km underwater tunnel that links France and England (the famous "Chunnel") was built with one of this company's tunneling machines. The company also built the second phase of the New Delhi Metro (53 kilometers). A week ago OPRET reported that it would be extending work on the Metro II line from Los Alcarrizos to San Isidro during the current presidential administration.
The Robbins Company had already reported that the tunnel-drilling machine had been acquired for the total construction of the Second Line, some 22 kilometers long, according to Diario Libre.
