Dominican ultra distance open water swimmer Marcos Diaz has been welcomed by Governor General Paul Matane of Papua New Guinea for the start of his Swim Across the Continents. The swim is part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Campaign. Between May and August 2010, Marcos Diaz will make 4 open water swims to connect the 5 continents of the world.
In Papua New Guinea the athlete was accompanied by Dominican ambassador to India, Hans Dannenberg Castellanos.
Governor Matane said he appreciated the promotion that his own country would receive for the swim and sent greetings to President Leonel Fernandez, Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso and the Dominican people. He stressed the importance that Fernandez has given to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. He also inquired about tourism development in the DR, given that his own country wants to stimulate tourism. He said he expects to formalize diplomatic relations between Papua New Guinea and the DR soon to continue uniting the Caribbean and the Pacific with an increase in diplomatic, commercial and cultural exchanges.
