20-year-old Starlin Castro from Montecristi in the northwestern corner of the Dominican Republic was playing professional baseball at the Double A level for the Chicago Cubs, until last Friday morning when he got the call saying he was being called up to the "Bigs".
That night, he became the youngest shortstop in Cubs' history. But that was not all. In his first at-bat in the Big Leagues, he hit a three-run homerun, only the sixth Cub player in the Chicago team's 135-year history. Jim Hendry, the Cubs' general manager said, "The kid gave us a spark. We really couldn't have written the script any better than that for the young man. What a special night it must have been for him."
The Cubs had just been swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates heading into Friday's game. Hendry called up Castro, who became the youngest shortstop in Cubs history and set the record for the most RBIs in a major-league debut in modern history. In Dominican Winter League baseball, Castro belongs to the Leones del Escogido.
