Candidates from all political parties running for office in Santiago in the 16 May election have signed a pact known as the Santiago Commitment 2010-2016. The pact establishes that whoever wins in the 16 May election will respect the initiatives agreed on by business groups and civil society organizations. The main priorities set out in the pact include: the construction of the city Circunvalacion Norte bypass avenue, urban renewal plans, construction of the Central Park, clean-up of 40 gullies that deposit polluted effluents into the Yaque del Norte River and the recovery of the city's main river. The agreement was signed at the Gran Teatro del Cibao by over 60 business and civil society organizations.
