The National Quisqueya Verde Plan and the Taiwanese Technical Mission in the DR will work together to develop a plan for producing, processing and marketing bamboo in the DR. The agreement was signed by Environment Minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, Quisqueya Verde Plan director Jose Enrique Baez, and the chief of the Mission for Industrial Services of Taiwan, Richard Li.
The Taiwanese Mission will provide specialist staff with expertise in bamboo production and processing. Quisqueya Verde will provide the plots for the planting and production of bamboo species and the labor force to maintain the area and the plantations. Both parties will train independent producers and provide support for bamboo furniture manufacturer associations in the production and marketing of these products.
The signing of the agreement follows the unfortunate burning of a large bamboo plantation belonging to Yin Tieh Hsieh, a Taiwanese national who is considered the father of rice production in the DR, in March. A deputy minister of Agriculture, who owns land bordering the plantation, is a suspect in the case.
