Police chief Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin, DNCD head Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo and Interpol chief Colonel Rafael Atahualpa Cabrera Sarita, as well as the district attorney for La Romana traveled to Venezuela to fly back with Ramon Antonio del Rosario Puente (Tono Lena). They arrived on board a private plane at the San Isidro Air Force Base from Venezuela yesterday. 43-year old Tono Lena is suspected of drug trafficking, money laundering, identity fraud and murder. He was arrested when attempting to travel to Colombia using a false identity. He will be tried in a La Romana court. Tono Lena will remain at the DNCD high security jail.
Rosado Mateo has described Tono Lena as the "most wanted man" in the DR.
As reported in Diario Libre, upon his arrival, Tono Lena blamed an unnamed politician as responsible for his arrest. He claimed: "I am innocent, I am innocent. This I owe to a politician and soon all will be known, in due time, you will know everything," he told the press.
Tono Lena said that he was arrested "for money that I lent to a politician," as reported in El Caribe.
The authorities had said Tono Lena was a central figure in the drug network led by Puerto Rican fugitive Jose David Figueroa Agosto. However, upon his arrival in Santo Domingo, Tono Lena denied knowing Figueroa Agosto.
General Rosado Mateo says that Tono Lena directed 80% of the drug drops in the east. La Romana prosecutor Jose Antonio Polanco said that drug drops in the region have declined considerably since Tono Lena's arrest.
Hoy news commentator Claudio Acosta writes today that the same authorities that touted the connections between Tono Lena and Figueroa Agosto in the past are now questioning them. He says that National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso plans to meet with the prosecutors in charge of the case to establish whether the alleged links to the Puerto Rican drug baron really existed. "Unless it is another tale by the authorities that at the time of showing up with the evidence of those ties in a court it will all come to nothing because the proof will not show up anywhere," he writes.
On the same plane, the authorities also brought Pedro Still Pena Tejada, who is accused of drug trafficking and murder.
Ramon Antonio Del Rosario Puente and Pedro Still Pena Tejada, described by the Spanish press as Dominican drug traffickers with ties to Puerto Rican fugitive drug trafficker Jose David Figueroa Agosto, were captured on 5 May in the Puerto Viejo sector, in front of Restaurant Brisas del Mar, La Guaira, at 6:30pm.
