Dominican volleyball player, petite Brenda Castillo (No. 5) has made the MTV list of the coolest 17 year olds from around the world. The Dominican Olympic Committee recognized Castillo as the best female athlete in the Dominican Republic in 2009.
Born 5 June 1992 in San Cristobal, she played as a libero for the DR's Women National Team at the 2008 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan. The team ended up in 4th place and did not qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. But shortly afterwards Castillo played in the Dominican team that won gold at the 2008 Women's Pan American Volleyball Cup in Mexico, when she was just 16 years of age. Later that year, she competed in the Final Four Intercontinental Cup in Lima, Peru in September 2009, where her team placed third behind Brazil and the United States and she won the Rising Star Award and the Best Digger, Best Receiver and Best Libero awards.
She also played in the 2009 Women's NORCECA Volleyball Championship that was the 21st edition of the Women's Continental Volleyball Tournament. Eight countries competed from September 22 to September 27, 2009 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The DR team won the event and qualified for the 2009 FIVB Women's World Grand Champions Cup in Japan.
With her National Junior Team, she won the Silver Medal at the 2009 U20 World Championship in Mexico being awarded Best Digger, Best Receiver, Best Libero and MVP awards, losing only to Germany.
