Power distribution companies were penalized with RD$22.8 million worth of refunds for their clients in April. This is almost a million more than the previous record refund total of RD$21.9 million in June 2009. The Superintendence of Electricity (SIE) said that clients had submitted their complaints to the Consumer Protection Department (Protecom), which ruled in their favor. Protecom was following guidelines provided in the General Electricity Law (125-01).
EdeSur was found to have made the largest number of overcharges. The company needs to return RD$16.6 million to its clients, or 72.8% of the total refunds. EdeNorte needs to return RD$3.5 million and EdeEste needs to return RD$2.5 million.
