[DR1] The cardinal says security is at risk

The Archbishop-Cardinal of Santo Domingo, Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, told reporters that the safety of the Dominican citizenry was being questioned, and he asked the authorities to carry out a thorough cleansing of the National Police. His statements came of the eve of a national summit meeting called by President Leonel Fernandez to deal with the rise in violent crime and juvenile delinquency. Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez said that the population feels unsafe in spite of the efforts of the Safe Barrio and Democratic Security Plans. Later today, the President will head a meeting of the National Council of Government (expanded), and the agenda deals with the issues surrounding the crime wave affecting the nation.
