The wave of robberies continues. A messenger for the remittance company Caribe Express was killed as he left his house in Las Caobas. In Santo Domingo North, a police corporal shot and killed an assailant as he wounded and tried to rob a 22 year old young woman of her cell phone and a 12-year old girl of her purse. The Police announced that they had picked up 1,573 persons during operations over the weekend. Three persons were killed in different incidents. One of the dead was a former leader of the FALPO movement and his death precipitated large and violent protests in Navarrete. Bernardo Santana Paez, the National Police chief, announced that 274 of the persons picked up had police files or were wanted for questioning. The police chief also announced that one thousand more cops would be out on the streets. He also said that his surprise visits to different station houses would continue. The police report did not indicate how many persons were subsequently released as per requirements of the new Penal Procedures Code.
