Civic group Citizen Participation has presented its third report on the intense use of government resources during the final days of the municipal and congressional election campaign.
The group released its findings of a snapshot of propaganda by political parties in March and April in the National District and the provinces of Santiago, La Vega, Espaillat (Moca) and Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris). Citizen Participation established that the political parties directly spent over RD$244 million. The highest level of spending was by the ruling PLD party with RD$148 million, followed by spending by the PRD with RD$79 million.
Citizen Participation describes the amount of government advertising in favor its candidates as "exorbitant", with the government spending RD$228 million, an amount similar to what the parties spent themselves.
Spokesman Santiago Sosa described the case of the National Lottery as "very serious", where its funded social assistance programs have been used to benefit the campaigns of selected ruling party candidates. Evidence has also been presented on cases where the Presidency Social Plan and the Potable Water Institute (INAPA) are said to have diverted funds to support government candidates.
