US author Jared Diamond described the contrast between the deforested Haiti and the forests still remaining in the DR on the eastern side of the island of Hispaniola in his book "Collapse". One of the main reasons for the deforestation is the Haitian practice of using charcoal for cooking, while in the DR propane gas is the norm.
Now, chef Jose Andres, and Roberto Alvarez, the owner of Jaleo and Cafe Pacifico restaurants in Washington want to make a difference in Haiti. Roberto Alvarez tells the story of how they visited Haiti recently, taking 10 solar ovens. The stoves cost US$190-US$345 and are powered by the sun. Spanish inventor Manolo Vilchez had given Andres one of the stoves during a promotional visit to Washington, DC. Andres tried it out for himself in Washington when the power went out during a blizzard.
Jose Andres was impressed and convinced Vilchez to work together on the project The Solar for Hope (www.thesolarforhope.org (http://www.thesolarforhope.org)) with which they hope to make a difference in Haiti.
