The president of the National Gasoline Retailer's Association (ANADEGAS), Juan Ignacio Espaillat, sharply criticized the government's method for raising and lowering the price of gasoline and diesel. Espaillat said that there was a lack of transparency, according to Hoy, and that the Hydrocarbon Law should be modified to require contracts, rather than spot purchases. Espaillat said that his group considers the Dominican Republic to be "a kidnapped victim" due to the system of using stock market prices to set local fuel pricing. According to Espaillat, the government's method of pricing does not reflect the real value of the fuel and if the current trend of price increases were to continue he foresaw serious problems for the nation. The ANADEGAS spokesperson called on the government to reduce the amount of taxes levied on each gallon of fuel sold.
