The rumored transfer of the port operations of Puerto Plata to the Port of Haina in the south of the Dominican Republic has local industrialists deeply preoccupied. According to the El Caribe, there is a project underway that would transfer most of the dock operations from Puerto Plata to Haina. The basis for these rumors is the virtual shutdown of the port as a result of the recent case of stowaways and the possibility that the gang that is suspected of moving illegal immigrants through the port is larger than suspected. Businessmen and industrialists consulted by the El Caribe said that such a transfer of operations would be near catastrophic for the region's businesses and industrial zones, because of the high cost of ground shipping in the DR. In addition, by shipping out of the Port of Puerto Plata, the local industrialists save an average of two days shipping time. According to one source, "if avoiding stowaways is what is wanted, all they have to do is increase security and surveillance inside the port." Currently, about 8,000 containers move through the port of Puerto Plata every year.
